Tenuta di Valgiano
Tradition, history and belonging are some key words you can use about Tenuta Valgiano. They swear to cultivate the traditional grape varieties that have grown and been grown in these areas for thousands of years. Taken into account the rare combination of the sandstone's rich soil that comes down from the hills behind the vineyard, which meets the more clayey soil further down, everything is in place for these wines to become something very special. Moreno Petrini and Laura di Collobiano bought this vineyard in 1992 and brought with them Saverio Petrelli who is a staunch advocate of natural winemaking. They started the hard work, not only of running a vineyard, but of running it according to Biodynamic principles. Their focus is on bringing out the natural properties of the grapes and the soil in which it grows, in the healthiest and most sustainable way. When Merlot thrives best in the clayey soil, Syrah in the sandstone soil and Sangiovese in the outer edge of the Alabarese soil, it is natural that this is how they promote the characteristics of each grape type, and when this is mixed together you get a wonderful mix of mineral, fruity wines that represent the very heart of «Vini Lucchesi». Tenuta Valgiano consists of a total of 40 hectares of cultivated land, of which 16 hectares are vineyards. They sow grass and other plants between the vines, protecting grapes against disease, using only natural aids, pick by hand, massage and squeeze the grapes in line with natural traditional methods in open wooden barrels. (the term grape drier fits here) They use gravity when the wine is to be transferred to oak barrels and cement tanks for maturation. After approx. 12 months on a mixture of new but most used barrels, the whole thing is moved to cement tanks for approx. 6 months before bottling. The vineyard itself is located on the farmer's land towards the bottom of where the Apennines end and the transition towards the flatter part that extends to Mare Tirreno. You can look down / down to Lucca city and if you throw yourself into their large garden during the harvest, you will find a peace and harmony that you like to associate with a "laid back" hippie festival. There is something bohemian about the whole life of Lauro and co, they are enormously hospitable, offer enormously of themselves and are simply people with tremendous integrity.
