Fattorie Romeo del Castello
Fattorie Romeo del Castello has been family owned for several generations and today Rosanna Romeo del Castello, her daughter Chiara Vigo and her husband Gianluca Torrisi runs the vineyard. The property is located just off Randazzo and comes within an area where 3 nature reserves meet. (Etna Regional Park, the Nebrodi Mountain Park and the Fluvial Park of the river Alcantara) Houses and vines have a fantastic location along one of the riverbanks of the Alcantara river and are located about 700m above sea level. As a result of this unique location, the area was named Contrada Allegracore which means "Where the heart is filled with happiness".
After the volcanic eruption in 1981, a large part of the area planted with hazelnuts and olive trees was covered with lava. Fortunately, the lava flow ruled just outside the old wine fields and buildings from the 1800s. You can see today how close the lava flow came.
The property consists of a total of approx. 30 hectares but only 13 of these are planted with grapes, then mainly Nerello Mascalese. The vineyard comes under Etna D.O.C. the territory and everything is run in line with the natural traditional way of cultivating here. Only organic methods are used and there are no traces of any chemical aids. 3 hectares of vineyards date from far back in time while the remaining 10 were replanted in 2004.
