Azienda Agricola Damijan Podversic

Damijan Podversic was raised to make classic wines by his father, thinking that one day he would take over the running of the family farm. His focus was already from a very young age on making wines in the traditional way. However, whenever he had the opportunity, he would drink local orange wines. After he met the winemaker Josko Gravner in 1985, he was well on his way to changing attitudes to winemaking completely. One expression that he learned early on is that if you want to get ahead in today's wine world, you must look back. After tasting one of the first commercialized Gravner wines bottled in 1998, he decided to discard everything he had learned from his family and wanted to start making wines the way Josko Gravner did. Due to disagreements in the family that Damijan will not get into, he was denied use of the family's Cantina and he was not allowed to use grapes from the family's vineyards.

Although Damijan already in 1988 founded his Az. Agr Damijan Podversic so it was not until 1999 that he went to the acquisition of an old overgrown terrace area, cleaned it up and replanted. People thought he was crazy and would fail before even seeing his first grape. Damijan is now one of the very few who peels the grapes for all the wines he makes, for 2-3 months. He seeks the white grapes to have elements of Botrytis (especially on KAPLJA). It must be said that the most important thing when Damijan makes the decision of when to harvest the grape is by checking the maturation of the skin of the grape and the grape stone. He cultivates biodynamically (not certified) and tries to follow lunar phases. Everything spontaneously ferments and is massaged in barrels with a narrow opening on top and then placed on large bottles for maturation. Damijan does not like to call his wines orange and the method of long peel maceration is done primarily to preserve the wines in a natural way but also to bring out all the properties of the grapes. All the work is in the vineyard, he says himself, and where the skin maceration often dominates the aroma picture in such wines, it is first and foremost the grape properties and the territory Damijan tries to bring out.
