Azienda Agricola Porta del Vento

Porta del Vento is located in a valley located approx. 600m. The area is called Valdibella and is part of Camporeale in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Valdibella is known for Alcamo DOC and Monreale DOC and this is where the grapes for Porta del Vento grow. He has about 10 hectares of plants that grow in sandy soil with rocky crust. The plants are more than thirty years old and were once planted by experienced farmers who were able to optimize the plants on the steep slopes. The terrain faces north and is known for a lot of wind with large temperature fluctuations. They grow organic / biodynamic (certified) and do not use synthetic products. The yield is low, about forty kilos per hectare. The harvest is done by hand, the grapes are harvested in small boxes and immediately taken to "Cantina" for pressing and natural fermentation. Then he lets nature take its course and the result is harmonious wines that reflect the territory it comes from in an excellent way. Marco Sferlazzo, who makes the wines and owns Porta del Vento, is extremely interested in nature and taking care of nature's diversity. This combined with his love for the authentic grape varieties that have grown in the mountains west of Sicily in the last 2000 years, results in him making wines that reflect the grape, the soil and nature in a completely unique way. He is also passionate about the search for antique / traditional ways of making wine. One of the methods that goes back to the old days is the Pèt Nat method (Petillant Naturel). Among professionals, the method is called, Metodo Ancestral, and this method goes back 500 years in time and probably before that and. It is said that it all came about by chance. Let's say a wine was bottled that was not completely fermented but due to the cold climate that came with the winter, fermentation stopped for natural reasons. When spring came and the temperature rose, the wine suddenly started a new fermentation, and this is how the bubbles came to be. The name Voria is the local dialect's name for the first cooling wind that comes after a hot summer and there is much of this he has managed to recreate in taste and aroma.
